Flu vaccination to be extended to 50-64 year olds from 1 December 2020

People aged between 50 and 64 are to be invited to have a free flu vaccine as part of the national seasonal flu campaign.

The Department of Health and Social Care has now confirmed that the flu programme will be extended to the new, younger age group from December.

This means that if you are aged between 50 and 64, you will be invited to get your free flu vaccine from the beginning of next month and into the New Year.

GPs and pharmacies across Slough, The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead; Bracknell, Surrey Heath and North East Hampshire and Farnham are currently arranging appointments to coincide with delivery of new vaccine stock.

Jo Greengrass, Associate Director of Nursing, Quality & Safety and Chair of the Frimley Collaborative Flu Group, said: “Due to its sheer scale, the flu vaccination campaign is carried out in phases and it’s important to remember that vaccinations will continue throughout the winter season. Because of this we would ask residents across the area to please be patient and wait to be contacted by their GP, as they make plans to roll out the vaccine to this new cohort. You can also visit your practice website for information.

She added: “If you are in one of the other priority eligible groups and have not yet had your vaccination, it’s not too late, you can still book an appointment by contacting your practice or local pharmacy.

“Even if you are currently working from home, or your contact with others has largely reduced in light of restrictions in place, it is still important that you have your flu vaccine if you’re in one of the eligible groups. This includes people aged 65 or over, people aged under 65 with long-term health conditions, pregnant women, carers, and shielded patients.”

The vaccine will also be available at some local pharmacies.

Flu clinic to be held at Blackbushe Airport:

With winter fast approaching we know that flu is a worry for many of our patients.

This year it is more important than ever for those who are eligible to safely have a free flu vaccination. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we must ensure that we follow social distancing and offer alternative methods to how we have historically delivered our flu clinics.

We are excited to announce that this year we will be offering our patients a drive through flu clinic. Conveniently located at Blackbushe Airport (Camberley GU17 9LQ) the drive through clinic allows patients to be safely administered with the flu vaccination in the comfort of their own car.

We are encouraging families and neighbours to car share wherever possible.

To book an appointment, please phone us on 01276 20 101.

Flu vaccine for 50-64 year olds:

Please note that, if you are aged between 50 and 64 and not in a clinical at risk group, the earliest you will be offered a flu vaccination is November, providing there is sufficient vaccine. No appointments will be offered for people in this age group until then. This is to ensure that those who are most at risk are vaccinated first. If you are aged 50 to 64 and are in a clinical ‘at risk’ group which is eligible for the flu vaccination, for example you have a health condition which puts you at risk from the flu, you will be invited earlier.
